Striking the right chord

What an awesome effort from our Year 8 rock band, The Spoons, who took out third place in the recent national Rockshop BandQuest competition.

Congratulations to band members Amélie Scrymengour – lead guitar / vocals, Phoebe Jones – lead vocals, Tiv Crozier – drums,  Ivy Mehrtens – keys, and Mae Wilkinson – bass.

The girls gained their place in the national competition having won their regional final, where 57 bands were vying for honours in Canterbury alone. It’s the highest placing yet of any St Margaret’s College Middle School band competing in BandQuest.

Band mentor Steve Fowler says the girls are natural performers and have great confidence on stage.

“They’re well-rehearsed and a very tight unit which collectively makes for a great sounding band. Phoebe is an excellent front person and really sells the performances, with great support from Ivy and Amélie. Tiv and Mae hold the rhythm section well.”

Amanda Woods, Head of Performing Arts, is excited about the growth in contemporary music at SMC.

“The Spoons are one of many recently formed rock bands here. Our goal is to encourage continued growth in the contemporary music scene at SMC and have many more students experiencing live performance events such as RockQuest and BandQuest.

“We are so lucky to have Steve Fowler and Emily Farrell as our rock band mentors.”

Not one to rest on his laurels, Steve is now looking ahead to the RockQuest competition in 2023.

RockQuest is open to Year 13 and below students with bands required to perform original compositions, while BandQuest is for Year 8 and younger.
