St. Margaret’s College students took center stage at the Canterbury ki te Tonga regional Shakespeare competition, being selected to perform at the national festival for both their 15-minute scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and 5-minute scene from Richard III.
Directed by Sophie Brownlie and Rhea Wallace, A Midsummer Night’s Dream also won Best Costuming and Best Supporting Actor, awarded to Sophie Brownlie, along with the Best 15-Minute Scene accolade.
Directed by CJay Horrey and Bridget Rooney, Richard III was recognized for Best Understanding of a Text, as well as Best 5-Minute Scene.
Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Rylie Plant, was awarded Best Use of Facial Expression.
Othello, directed by Philippa Morphet, was named Best Commitment to Text, with Zoe Rae receiving the Best Actor Award.
Our students were supported by SMC staff Megan Herd as mentor, Stacy Goldsworthy on costume design, and staff member and Old Girl Georgia Lassen, who has worked tirelessly with the students in preparing for the competition. Students now perform at the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn National Shakespeare Festival in Wellington later this year.
