St Margaret’s College extends commitment to a phone-free school day with Gate to Gate

Recent national and international reporting has highlighted the far-reaching impact of mobile devices and social media on the wellbeing of young people. At St Margaret’s College, this issue has been a focus for more than six years. In 2019, the College was one of the first schools in New Zealand to introduce a phone-free school day, with immediate benefits for students’ academic engagement, social connection and overall wellbeing.

To further support a healthy, focused learning environment, St Margaret’s College is extending its mobile phone policy with the introduction of Gate to Gate. From 7.30am to 4.30pm, and across the campus, phones will be switched off and stored in lockers or bags.

Ensuring students have a daily, extended period away from mobile devices offers several benefits, including minimising cognitive distraction, improved focus, reduced anxiety, increased connection, and equity for all learners.

Gate to Gate provides clarity and consistency around device use across the school day, reinforcing St Margaret’s commitment to student wellbeing, academic excellence, and a strong sense of community.
