Opening doors to U.S. university study

As part of our Careers and Future Pathways programme, we recently welcomed the former Assistant Dean of Admissions at Stanford University to St Margaret’s College to speak with students and parents about the United States university system and the application and admissions process.

Each year, a proportion of St Margaret’s alumnae travel overseas to pursue university study, and sessions like this help ensure our students are well prepared to explore global pathways with confidence.

Martin shared valuable insights into U.S. university selection criteria, explaining that admissions decisions consider academic achievement, intellectual vitality, and the broader needs of the institution. He emphasised that intellectual vitality is key, encouraging students to demonstrate curiosity, active engagement in their learning, and a willingness to contribute to their communities.

Martin also highlighted that students educated in New Zealand are currently underrepresented at U.S. universities, meaning they can be seen as valuable and distinctive contributors to campus life.
