The Junior and Senior Debating Teams yesterday both won their divisions at the Canterbury Schools’ Debating Council Inter-School Competition.
The Senior Team of Milly O’Brien, Aisha O’Malley and Ruby Anderson beat Christchurch Boys High School in an excellent debate about whether celebrities have a moral obligation to use their media platforms for progressive change. Millie was named Best Speaker.
The Junior final was a closely fought race between two excellent SMC Year 10 teams debating whether there should be compulsory Te Reo taught in schools. In the end, there was just half a point between them, with Hattie Compton-Moen, Lucy Jessep and Grace McMahon nudging out Sophie Benson, Elizabeth Cross and Amelia Parker to take the cup. Lucy Jessep was named Best Speaker.
